70 dogs killed in Ohio puppy mill fire

An Ohio fire department is reporting the deaths of dozens of dogs after what they describe as a "puppy mill" went up in flames on Wednesday.

The fire was at a building on Chesterville-Shelby Road, the Jonesville Fire Department said.

Chief Harlan Barrick tells WSYX that the fire took 40 minutes to control, and during that time one puppy was rescued by firefighters. Around 17 other dogs were freed by the owner from the burning building before firefighters arrived.

Unfortunately, officials report that around 70 dogs died as a result of the fire.

Officials believe the fire somehow started from the wood-burning stove in the middle of the building.

The property owner told the department that they had "placed wood in the wood-burning stove used to heat the building" before the fire had started.
