Clanfolk: Farming And Food Guide

Learn all about survival through farming and food production in Clanfolk

Clanfolk is a colony simulation game with a medieval setting set in the Scottish Highlands. You are tasked to ensure your clan survives through farming, gathering, building, and much more, using your environment and surroundings.

But things can get tricky, and you’ll soon find survival is a challenging battle. You need to make tough decisions, manage, micromanage resources, and utilize these resources and your clan members to ensure your settlement is comfortable and sustainable for the foreseeable future. This guide will outline everything you need to know about Farming and Food in Clanfolk. Helping you to plan on procuring and stockpiling resources.

Surviving in Clanfolk

When starting a new game in Clanfolk, the primary goal should be to procure food as much as possible, collect different resources for crafting materials, and then focus on farming. In fact, you will start with two hens, a rooster, and dried mushrooms. Start farming as soon as possible, and keep hunting for food and other materials.

Over time, you can achieve efficient farmland, homes, stockpiling of essential resources, and crafting. These include collecting water and food, manufacturing clothing, and creating fire. Stockpiling and efficient use of resources is important to be aware of, or else staying alive through the harsh winters becomes impossible. Since food and water become hard to find. Additionally, you cannot farm, and water becomes scarce.

But don’t fear; as you unlock more crafting techniques and skills, managing all the abovementioned factors becomes more manageable and productive. You can then finally focus on other areas of your settlement.

Check below for an in-depth guide on what types of food are found, grown, and other farming elements in Clanfolk.

Farming, Food, Hunting, and Domestication in Clanfolk

You can gather food through hunting, farming, herding, and foraging in the wild. At the start of the game, you cannot farm right away, but you’ll get access to some food items that get the job done well enough. They are Berries, Mushrooms, and Eels. Of course, there is more variety of food to find in the Clanfolk.

Berries

Consider berries as the starting food of your journey. They are easy to find and located in bushes all around you. Pick them up wherever you find bushes. They are also growable. Although they can be stacked to 100, berries perish quickly. So it’s a good idea to collect them in small amounts(30-40 berries) enough to pass a day and keep the rest safe in the bushes.

Apart from berries, there are other early game food items to harvest and consume, so you don’t have to depend on berries to survive solely.

Eels

Eels are another easy-to-find food item in the game. It is the only fish that requires no hunting or fishing skills. Moreover, they are abundant in all lakes. To catch eels, you need to craft the Eel trap, a tier 8 idea. For it, you need one straw and one stick, common materials in the game. Like berries, eels also spoil, so you manage them accordingly.

Eels can be consumed both raw or cooked. Of course, cooking is preferable as it provides better stats and stays fresh for longer. But cooking requires extra effort, and you need a campfire, the ability to make fire, and sticks.

Eels are preferable when the population of your clan starts to increase. They are easily collected in large amounts and take care of hunger well.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are found in groups in specific locations where they grow back. They grow more in Fall than in any other season, hence more common during Fall. Since they rot slowly, it is a good idea to stockpile them more rather than consume them till Winter. Additionally, you can create dried mushrooms after crafting a mushroom rack, making compost, and tilled soil. Dried mushrooms do not rot unless exposed to rain and can be used as an excellent food source when other supplies are short.

After you build your first homestead, you can start farming and lay back a bit on collecting, Berries, Mushrooms, and Eels as your only food source.

Farming

You can farm four crops in Clanfolk; Berry Bushes, Grass, Oats, Flax, and Reeds. Berries are planted through their fruit; the rest requires seeds. Seeds can be crafted, making them very sustainable and very important for the advancement of your clan. Use them to create advanced and healthy food; for both people and animals. They can also be used to make crafting and construction materials. Start farming for all types of crops as soon as you can.

Till your soil with a hoe, plant a proper amount of seed, and use an adequate amount of fertilizer for a healthy output of crops. Water your plants daily using water jugs. Assign members with high agricultural skills to tilled soils, and they will take care of your crops.

Farming should be your primary source of food, along with water. In Clanfolk, water is easily obtainable, but you must store it as a well because Winter freezes up all lakes, and water becomes scarce. Do so by crafting water jugs through kilns. You will need these jugs to water your farmlands and put out fires. Make sure you never fall short on water jugs. You will need them in the harsh winters.

Hunting

Along with farming, you should invest in hunting. Not only does it bring in meat as food but also animal hide, skins for clothing, and other crafts. To unlock the hunt wild animals job, craft a bow, and assign hunting jobs with top priority to members.

Moreover, you must set up some other things to process your hunt. Starting with a butcher block (tier 14 idea) to slaughter and prep animals and meat. You can also craft a meat rack (tier 10 idea) to help store large amounts of raw meat. Hide racks (tier 15 idea) allow you to keep raw hides and turn them into dry ones, which is essential for crafting clothes. Finally, you’d want to clean up blood trails, animal remains, and wastes to keep your settlement clean and raise the environment stat of your clan.

With your hunted meat and fish, you can choose to cook and smoke them. Cooked meat is more nutritional than smoked but rots after two days; also more accessible. On the other hand, smoked meat requires you to build a smoke(tier 19 idea), and it keeps meat edible for ten days. Something to keep at bay for the winter seasons.

As of now, you can hunt for foxes, rabbits, and also fish. Each requires different effort, ideas, and skills; each has different meat yields.

Foxes

Foxes are the easiest to hunt for and provide an ample supply of meat and hide. Just make sure your hunting tools and hunters are well maintained.

Rabbits

Rabbits are harder to hunt or catch as they can run away faster. To efficiently catch rabbits, you need snare kits (tier 19). Combine straws and branches in a work zone to produce them. Locate areas where rabbits are prevalent and place these snare kits.

Fish

You need the fishing spot idea to catch any fish apart from eels (tier 24). Obtaining this idea unlocks the fishing job. Fishing for a good supply requires patience and should be focused on when you have other primary food sources.

Domestication

Domestication is another way of getting a good, sustainable supply of food; by raising animals. Additionally, it also gives a variety of food such as meat, milk, eggs, and other valuable materials, such as wool and hides. You can keep them for making advanced items or sell them for a great value.

Domestic animals have stats that need to be taken care of. These are Age, Health, Food, Water, Care(shelter, bedding), and Manure(fertilizer production). You need to keep all these stats in check to keep them happy, healthy, and getting a good yield.

Before raising animals, ensure you have an indoor shelter with water troughs and animal doors to keep them safe indoors when needed.

Domestic animals in Clanfolk are:

Chickens

Rooster costs 50. Hen costs 75. They provide eggs that can be eaten, used in cooking, or sold and are the cheapest and easiest to raise. Chickens need shelter with a bed and grain and water trough for feeding and do not need much attention outside. Furthermore, they provided food of about 1000, which stays fresh for ten days, making Chickens a cheap but profitable starting investment for your animal farm.

Cattle

Bulls cost 150. Cows cost 225. They are another simple animal in Clanfolk. For outside, Cattle must be near grass and water to feed automatically. While inside shelters, they need bedding, water, and a grain/hay trough.

Cows produce milk that can be sold or used to make butter and cheese, which in turn can be sold for a greater price. Of course, both can also be eaten. In fact, butter stays fresh for five days, and cheese, for 15 days, making them a tremendous long-term food source. To obtain the milk, you need a milking bucket, which requires iron ingots from iron ores and smithies found later in the game.

Goats

Billy costs 100, and Nanny costs 150. Goats also produce milk which is used the same way as Cattle milk. Actually, Goats are a smaller, cheaper, and quicker version of Cattles. They have milk quicker, and butter and cheese are also created quicker. The downside is that the yield is lower, but it balances well with its low cost of purchase and maintenance. Herding cattle and goats is a great idea and lets you have a considerable stockpile of food items accompanied by a supply for daily usage.

Sheep

Rams cost 100, and Ewes cost 150. Sheep provide both meat and wool, but since you have other animals to provide meat, especially pigs, you’ll learn later on, Sheep should be used for collecting wool. They can go for large prices and, more importantly, be used to craft higher-quality clothes. Essential for surviving Winter.

Making proper use of Sheep requires advanced skills and crafts acquired mid to late game. Such as members with high crafting skills, iron ores to create iron ingots, used to craft shears, smithy(tier 21), and bloomery (tier 17) to process and turn ores into ingots. So you are better off with the other domestic animals early in the game. Make sure to invest in Sheep when your settlement is capable.

Pigs

Boar cost 80, and Sow cost 120

Pigs only provide meat. Hence, Pigs are an excellent investment for a steady supply of meat for your clan. They are cheap, do not need much to look after, and also have a good yield of meat. Any player should always breed some pigs and might also consider them their primary meat source. Slaughter Pigs during the Winter when Sheep, Cattle, Goats, and Chicken are needed to produce other valuable items.

These are everything you need to know about surviving in Clanfolk through farming and growing food. Plan to ensure your settlement is always healthy so you can focus on other aspects to flourish your clan’s skillset and the settlement’s economy, such as crafting, trading, and stockpiling.
